Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my USB copy slower than the rated speed?

Rated speeds are peak values. Real transfers are slower because of many small files, drive caching, and USB overhead. A USB 3.0 stick rated at 100MB/s often averages 30-60MB/s with mixed files.

How long does it take to copy 10GB over USB 3.0?

At a realistic 100MB/s, 10GB (about 10240MB) takes roughly 100 seconds, or under two minutes. Slower USB 2.0 at 30MB/s would take around six minutes for the same data.

Does the type of file affect transfer time?

Yes. One large 10GB movie copies quickly, while thousands of tiny files of the same total size copy much slower because the drive must open and close each file individually.
